No security means outside access to network and hacking issues. WEP is not very secure but WPA does a better job. There is also 'networking over your house hydro wires' which is not advertised very much but works well in areas where wireless access fails.
Vista service pack 1 beta has been out for a month or so and has recently been refreshed. The final release is a couple of months away. You are looking at half day to do this. It does speed up the Vista systems and stop a number of aggravating issues.
